| Finding the right people to do your outsourcing tasks can make the difference between big profits and costly regrets later on. Though outsourcing has been around for sometime, its continuing popularity is proving to be its own undoing. Rates are going up all the time and good providers jump from job to job without any commitment. You hear of countless horror stories and substandard service that leave some business owners burned. But all of these could have been prevented with some proper planning and foresight. Having a good plan will help you sidestep most common problems and maintain a smooth working relationship with outsourcers. Here are some suggestions… Get vendors/contractors with the right experience for the task. It's always good to have a test run of services and get a feel of what your provider can do. Look at ability and experience instead of a long client list or impressive looking offices (for vendor companies). Study how much they have done with the same task with other buyers. Never assume. What sounds simple to you may sound complicated to your outsourcing agent so avoid oversimplifying instructions. Also take into account the cultural context. What sounds logical in your part of the world may not be familiar to your contractor in theirs. Put in the time for a proper training system to clarify objectives. Try out providers in multiple countries. Gauge the quality of costs and turnaround time among different vendors or providers. Keep multiple contactors working on similar tasks to have someone replace another just in case something happens. Always have a backup plan to keep your projects moving forward. Evaluate work constantly. Quality control should always be part of your outsourcing strategy. Install a good evaluation system on both sides to catch issues early in the production process. There should also be a proactive commitment on your part to manage the whole process with continued foresight. Make sure you are offering a win-win service agreement with your contractor. Outsourcing is by nature a competitive market and talented people are always on the move. Offer a profitable service contract to hire and retain good people for your assignments. Finding the cheapest service on every task can actually drain more of your time and energy. It would be better to work with the same people to ensure faster turnarounds than continually shopping for the cheapest set of skills you can find.
